To commemorate the 60th anniversary of the establishment of the city and the 20th anniversary of the naming of Futabasaurus suzukii, we are holding a special exhibition “Rulers of the Sea in the Age of Dinosaurs: Plesiosaurs”! The exhibition spotlights plesiosaurs, which reigned as “rulers of the sea” during the Mesozoic, and centers on an actual complete plesiosaur skeleton fossil from the UK in our collection, explaining the evolution and ecology of plesiosaurs. This year also marks the 20th anniversary since the fossil of “フタバスズキリュウ”, discovered in the city in 1968, was described and named as the new genus and species Futabasaurus suzukii (フタバサウルス・スズキイ) in 2006. In line with this, we will specially exhibit plesiosaur fossils from Iwaki (original specimens) that are not usually on public display.

【Reiwa 8 Special Exhibition】 Seikodo Bookstore was a books-and-stationery shop located in present-day Taira, Iwaki City, from the Meiji period to the early Showa era. In addition to selling books, it published picture postcards and local materials, contributing to the promotion of regional culture. This exhibition presents its history through books published by Seikodo and materials preserved by the 関内 family who managed the bookstore.
