At Senshō-ji, as part of Iwaki City’s 60th Anniversary of Municipal Incorporation Commemorative Project (adopted under the Town & Future Creation Support Grant), we will hold the 'Ume Harvest Festival'. Since the city’s municipal incorporation in Showa 41, Iwaki has advanced through the endeavors and support of many people, and this year marks a major milestone: its 60th anniversary. This project seeks to give concrete form to the ideals of 'sharing civic pride' and 'passing it on to the next generation' through local landscapes, people, and culture. Senshō-ji is home to ume trees that have grown alongside the community for many years. This Ume Harvest Festival has been planned as a place for “co-creation” where we harvest the ume together with local residents, promote intergenerational exchange, and rediscover the charms of the area. Moreover, this event is more than just a harvest experience. With the cooperation of Iwaki Winery, the harvested ume will be brewed into ume wine, and we also plan to have younger generations design the labels. “Connecting local resources to the community’s future”—— This is also a challenge to create a new local brand, befitting the city’s 60th anniversary. Furthermore, this initiative is part of a project that will lead to next spring’s 'Ume Light-up'. Through the historic site of Senshō-ji, we hope to carry “light and bounty” into the next 60 years. Surrounded by the fragrance of ume, we would be delighted if you could join us for a moment that connects nature and people, and people and community. 【Ume Harvest Festival】 Date and time: Saturday, May 30, 2026, 10:00〜12:00 (canceled in case of rain) Place: Senshō-ji (いわき市平山崎梅福山5) Participation fee: Free ※ Advance registration required. The poet Kusano Shinpei (1903–1988) was deeply moved by the people and nature of Kawauchi Village in Futaba District and visited Kawauchi almost every year. Kawauchi Village conferred on Shinpei the title of Honorary Village Resident, and later, prompted by his donation of 3,000 volumes to the village, the Tenzan Bunko was built in the village to house his collection. This exhibition, marking the 60th anniversary of the Tenzan Bunko’s establishment, presents Shinpei’s ties with Kawauchi Village and works related to the village.
